For the animal research report we had to look up information on the Northern Pacific Rattlesnake. For my portion of the research I did reproduction. The Northern Pacific Rattle snake usually mate when the weather is some what warm. The male usually sniffs out the females from her fat. If two males end up wanting the same female they will end up fighting over the females and whoever wins gets to mate with the female. After mating the female Keeps the sperm in her body over winter. Then as the weather gets warmer she fertilizes. The female is usually gravid (pregnant) for up to 90- 110 days.
Near the end of Summer the female finds a den to have her babies. Unlike other reptiles the Northern Pacific Rattlesnake, instead of laying eggs, gives live birth. When the babies are born they have a little "button" were their rattles will grow. After birth the female goes into hibernation. After their first shedding the baby snakes go into the den with their mother to hibernate. That whole period lasts 19 months. This is why the females mate evry
